My Care Journeys

My Care Journeys

My life has not always been amazing, but I make the best out of a bad situation. Some people think the care system is a scary thing, like something out of Tracy Beaker’s Dumping Ground, but it is not.

Some bits are true, some are not; I am here to tell you my story, so here it is:

It was the night of my dad’s funeral. My step mum told my aunt to take me, ‘cause she did not want me. So, I went home, packed a bag and went to my aunt’s.

At first everything was going well, but then she was starting arguments with me. We could not stand the sight of each other. So, I tried to stay out of her road but she still would find a way to pick fights. She was always saying it was my fault and I would believe it at times.

One day, out of nowhere, two social workers showed up at the school and told me that I was going into care. I was shocked; angry; upset. I thought it was all my fault. They said they would take my back to pack my stuff up.

When I got to my carer’s house I was scared. I did not trust where I was going and the unknown. So, I put a brave face on and went in, and they were so nice to me. They showed me that I could trust them. But we started having disagreements about things, then she emailed my social worker that she did not want me.

The next day she came out, told me I was moving and to pack my things. I went to another carer. They had this boy there; he and I did not get along so I stayed in my room. It did not last long until I was moved again. So, once again, I packed my stuff up and moved.

I got this temporary placement until they could find me somewhere permanent and they were so nice to me. They did lots of things with me. This actually felt like home, until my carer got a call saying that they have found me a placement.

My social worker came out in the morning and helped me put all my stuff into her car. When I saw this massive house I was going to, I was in shock; but I could see other kids outside playing and I knew it was a children’s house. I told my social worker I did not want to go in, but she said that everything was going to be okay and to face the situation head on. So, we went to the door and rang the buzzer. This staff member came to the door and was very nice and funny and made me laugh.

I was not all that scared anymore. I have been here now 2 years and my story is still not done.

One bit of advice I would give a kid in care: no matter what, do not give up. Just because you think it is bad, it will only be bad for a while, not forever, so turn a negative into a positive and keep on fighting.

Oh No, Not That Song Again!

Pop music to me is the music I don’t want to hear.

It’s very overplayed which to me ruins it. I’m not the biggest  fan of pop but I feel like, if there is a really good song that I like, it’s safe to say that a lot of other people like it and there is a high chance that it will be so overplayed on the radio or by people I’m around. For example, when ‘Prey For The Wicked’ was first released, I liked the songs. Yes, it was different to what I usually listen to, but I didn’t mind it.

Now I don’t listen to any of the songs and High Hopes is so overplayed. I can’t stand it. Although, I do like some pop songs when they are on the ‘Pop Goes Punk’ album because it gives the songs a different sound.

Pop in the past was so much better to me, 80’s pop specifically. I liked some 90’s and early 2000’s, but I feel like, from 2010 onwards, pop really went downhill. In the past I feel like there was a lot more balance as well. I don’t think any songs were overplayed to the point people couldn’t stand it. Also, the songs were better; they weren’t all about one specific topic, they were varied. For example, in today’s pop there are a lot of songs about love, breakups and a couple of other topics. Pop before 2010 was much better than todays pop.

To me the future of pop is at risk, if they don’t stop overplaying the songs and writing songs about similar topics the genre will start to lose people. There are really talented singers so I know there will be a future for pop, but they need to push the boundaries a bit. Make it more interesting, make the listener enjoy it. Also, the radio presenters need to stop repeating songs so often, so the listeners enjoy listening to their show.

There are people who swear by pop, but honestly it needs to change. Not completely, but if certain elements are changed pop could evolve, move forward and be music people enjoy without thinking or saying, “Oh God, not this song again.”

Album Review - Fall Out Boy - Mania

Fall Out Boy Mania.jpg

Fall Out Boy - Mania

Released: 19/01/18

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Although it is not my favourite Fall Out Boy album, it is still quite good and I would still recommend it.

Author: Tia Collins

Album Review

Fall Out Boy are an American band with around 18 million monthly listeners. The band is made up of the same 4 members as when their debut album ‘Take This To Your Grave’ was released, 15 years before ‘Mania’.

The band have collaborated with many other artists such as Elton john, Courtney Love, Brendon Urie, Lil’ Peep and many more.

‘Mania’ is the band’s 7th studio album and is very different to the band’s prior albums. However, the album has a song for almost everyone as there is a variety of different sounding songs. Some fans weren’t too fond of the sound originally but many like myself have grown to like it.

Favourite Song

My favourite song off of the album is ‘Last of the Real Ones.’ I really like the sound of it and I like the vocals in it. It is also well written.

Least Favourite

My least favourite song is ‘Champion.’ It is a good song, I just don’t listen to it a lot and I think there are better songs than this on the album

Further Recommendation

I would recommend ‘From Under The Cork Tree’ and ‘Infinity On High’. They are older albums but they are really good.

This weeks review will be on Limitless, a 2011 film starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

This movie is about a low life named Edward Morra. He tries to write his book up and he attempts to do what he can in his little apartment.

One day someone gives Eddie a pill called NZT. This pill gives the user access to 100% of their brain power and they become the smartest person alive. However, the pill comes with severe side effects.

Over all i really enjoy the concept of this movie. The story does start off a bit slow but it does build up eventually.

Cntrl Z

Released: 22/05/2020

Created by: Miguel García Moreno, Adriana Pelusi, Carlos Quintanilla

Seasons: 1

Rating: 8.5/10

This TV show is a really good watch.

Overall i really enjoyed the show, very thrilling and enjoyable. I'd give Control Z about a 8.5 out of 10.

Author: Phoenix Murray

Review

This weeks review will be on Control Z, this is a new addition to Netflix.

This TV show is directed by Alejandro Lozano and the genre of this show is teen drama.

Fair warning, this TV show has explicit content such as nudity, swearing, drug references and self harm.

Control Z is based on the local high school life for some pupils. The school setting changes when a hacker threatens to expose everyone's secrets, if they don't comply with the demands.

It is down to main character Sophia and a new pupil to figure out who the hacker is and expose them.

It leaves you wanting more, more answers of who the hacker is and there are a lot of plot twists. You maybe able to relate to at least one character.

Album Review - Royal Blood – How Did We Get So Dark?

Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark.jpg

Royal Blood – How Did We Get So Dark?

Released 16/06/17

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I would recommend as the album has a really nice sound and I really enjoyed listening to it
the album has quite a dark feel to it, so it lives up to the name. Also the album has recieved
some criticism but I really like it.

Author: Tia Collins

Album Review

Royal Blood are an English band that have around 2 million monthly listeners. ‘How Did We Get So Dark?’ is the bands second album coming 3 years after their debut album ‘Royal Blood.’ Their sound has mostly stayed the same between both album releases but has changed slightly.

‘How Did We Get So Dark?’ isn’t given enough or as much praise as their debut album however it sticks to the bands style and some songs really stand out. The album features ten songs and lasts 34 minutes.

Favourite Song

My favourite song off of the album is Lights Out. The reason for this is because I like how the song sounds and how powerful it is. I also really like Don’t Tell because it is more of a sinister sounding song.

Least Favourite Song

My least favourite song is Where Are You Now? The reason for this is genuinely because I listened to it the least and I feel like its slightly out of place in the album, it does fit just not as well as the others.

Further Recommendation

I would recommend their debut album ‘Royal Blood.’

What's Wrong Harry?

It was a usual morning in early Autumn, the trees were losing their leaves and turning brown. Everything was going according to plan for everyone going back to school, except for one individual who didn't want to return.

Harry lived a pretty normal life, mother and father were still together and living in the same household. Harry got up for school feeling very strange and all that ran through Harry's mind was "what's wrong with me? Why am I feeling this way?" But Harry still got up as planned as this was his first day in high school and he didn't ask his parents anything about how he was feeling.

Moving downstairs to get his breakfast and then off to school he went. Harry got on the school bus and saw a few of his friends Sam and Darrell.

"Hey guys" Harry says to the other two.

The other two responds "hey man" said Sam "awrite dude" said Darrell.

The 3 misfits end up at school and they all split up as they need to go to there classes.

Throughout the day Harry kept feeling stranger and stranger, finally approaching his teacher

"Could I get a minute outside the class?"

Mr Nortan just simply says to him "yeah that's not a problem"

Harry goes outside of the classroom and starts to breakdown and cry. Some of the teachers see harry crying and they invite him into a quiet room. Miss Paton takes Harry in

"What's wrong?", she asks him

Harry doesn't respond

"If you don't talk then I can't help you Harry"

Harry looks up "I don't know what's wrong because there's nothing to feel wrong about"

Miss Paton goes outside the classroom to talk with Mr Nortan. she comes back into the classroom and says to harry

"Come on we are going to go to the head teacher"

Harry just nods and says "okay".

Mr Johnson is the head of the whole school, he cares about helping every pupil that has comes to him.

Miss Paton says to harry "stay here while I have a word with Mr Johnson.

Harry takes a seat next to Mr Johnson's office and soon gets called into the office to join his teachers, Mr Johnson, clearly concerned, looks up at harry and asks

"What seems to be the matter with you?" Harry just shrugs his shoulders.

Harry's face tells Mr Johnson everything

"I’ve seen this before Harry and I want to help you get better"

Harry looks up and asks "but what if I don't know what's wrong?"

Mr Johnson hands Harry a card with a phone number on it. "That's okay just contact these people if you ever feel like this again"

Harry carries the card in his pocket as he continues his day at school, once he arrives home he starts to break down again, remembering the advice from Mr Johnson earlier in the day, Harry removes the card form his pocket and with some hope, he dials the phone number, unsure of who will answer.

Harry speaks out as soon as the call is connected

"Hello I got this number from my head teacher and I think something is wrong but I don't know what it is"

The voice on the other end pauses and second, before calmly responding

"I’m really glad you called, our speak out group is running tomorrow at 4pm in the library, by all means come and join in”

Harry wakes up on the next morning and goes to school like normal, he sees Mr Johnson in the corridor and is called over

“How are you feeling today Harry”, he asks

Harry explains to Mr Johnson that he called the number is going to go down to the group to speak out about how he is feeling.

Mr Johnson looks pleased and happy that harry has taken the first steps and made contact.

As school is finishing for the day Harry makes his way to the library and suddenly realises his friends Sam and Darrell are there, they greet him into the group

Harry has been going to the same group ever since and he has good days and not so good days but he still attends.

The breakfast club was released in 1985 and was directed by John Hughes.

The Breakfast Club is about five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal.

The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.

In my opinion of this movie, i really enjoyed it but it does start a bit too slow and some scenes didn't need to be in the movie but overall i liked the story of The Breakfast Club and loved the soundtrack.

Panic! At The Disco - Pray for the Wicked

Released 22/06/18

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I personally wouldn’t really recommend this album as I didn’t really enjoy listening to it and I prefer some of the bands other albums that I have heard before, but I know people that do like this album.

Album Review

Panic! At the Disco are an American band that have around 22million monthly listeners. ‘Pray for the Wicked’ is the bands 6th studio album coming 13 years after their debut, ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’

‘Pray for the Wicked’ is an album which is different from the styles of the band’s other releases, this album has more of a pop feel compared to there earlier style. However, lead singer Brendon Urie’s vocals don’t disappoint as his vocal range has really been shown in this album.

Favourite Song

My favourite song is Roaring 20’s. This is because I like how upbeat it is and its catchy. I also really like the vocals in this song.

Least Favourite Song

My least favourite is high hopes this is because it’s very overplayed and it’s just not the kind of song I listen to normally.

Further Recommendation

Something I would recommend from the band would be their first album ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ and also their album ‘Death of a Bachelor.’
